Anum Aftab ka LMA movie trivia day 3 ka aankhoun daikha haal
Sarah Fatima | 10/11/2009

Drum rolling, back thumping; cheery crowds emerged from the SS auditorium at the end of the third and the final day of the film trivia. The semi final and final round had indeed turned out to be an epic battle between the four teams, incidentally each from a different batch.

The first rapid fire round started with much anticipation and excitement, and was a clear indication of what was to come as the chatni team of batch 2013 and two drums and a lion of 2011 batch were tied at 60 points each. If the first round was anything to go by, the second round was even more entertaining. Teams were to listen to an audio clip and then answer the questions related to them. Surprisingly, the chatni team, which consisted of all guys guessed the music of the film “the princess diaries” and were able to answer all questions related to it. Kudos to them for keeping up with girly movies!!!! The other teams had a slightly more difficult time; ...

LMA MOVIE TRIVIA- DAY 1
Written by: Mahrukh Afzal Kayani
Maryam Farooq |

It was an event most Luminities had been hearing about. Intrigued by the colorful flyers and mysterious posters, anticipating, what exactly entailed the Movie Trivia. So, on 7th November, ’09, Saturday, around 7:30 pm, 32 participating teams gathered in their allotted rooms, to battle head-to-head against each other in a Movie competition. The team with the most knowledge of Bollywood, Hollywood, and Lollywood movies/characters/actors would claim the prize of Rs. 5000/-. After failed attempts to bribe the hosts/ushers and Movie Trivia organizers to reveal a few questions beforehand (tsk tsk, its just a movie trivia, not finals people), the teams made their way to their auditoriums, throwing longing, covetous glances at the sheets of paper containing the questions, in the organizers’ hands. =P. How sad.

2 hosts and I were assigned to host for the room SC-3, where we had 4 teams. Us hosts giggled over the ahem ‘diverse’ names of ...

~Filmoun Kay Badshah Maidan Main~
Zuneera Azhar on LMA Movia trivia day 2
Sarah Fatima | 09/11/2009

Day 2 was scheduled to start at 7:30 on the 8th of Nov. 16 out of 32 teams had qualified after the first day of competition. These teams were divided into sets of four; one team from each set was to qualify for the finals. As the time for this came closer, the participants of the movie trivia could be seen acting in weird, yet entertaining, ways. Outside the auditoriums, some of the participants were holding notes. Their constant to and fro movements, while revising the ‘important details’, made me think: Oh! If only I had worked this hard in my exams!!!

While some were literally trying to absorb all the info by the ‘trusted’ method of ‘pani main ghol kar’, others were running after Faran Rafi, the head of this event. After their strenous tries to get a glance of the questions’ folder in his hand, they turned to the other groups for help with ‘Oh come on yaar! Wo to kal hum aik doosre kay against compete kar rahe thae naaa! ...

ENIGMA: Legendary?... or just...
Khushbakht Ejaz narrates the happenings of the SPADES event
Sarah Fatima | 06/11/2009

Right at the end of the mid-week SPADES announced that it would be holding ‘Enigma’ on Thursday, 5th November 2009. The publicity fliers and the promotional emails portrayed ‘Enigma’ as an event resembling scavenger or a treasure hunt (or at least that was the general idea LUMS population had, including me). The team registration for the event commenced on Tuesday. The heady publicity by SPADES and, as some might point out, the perfect timing of the event (it was right after the mids), managed to draw an encouraging response from LUMS Student body such that the team registration was closed with a few hours of its commencement and SPADES had over twenty five teams registered. This was a surprise, considering that SPADES is still an infant society and doesn’t possess the hype of the Music, IEEE or Alpha or the reputation of LUMUN or LES (at least not yet).

On the assigned date, all participants were directed to gather in A-3 at 6 ...

It\'s Business Time!
TAlha WaheeD\'s tale of the music society\'s open house
Sarah Fatima | 06/11/2009

The Mid’s are over, the rejuvenating process has begun and to help us with it our very own Music Society had arranged an open house for us Luminites to bring out our cheerful singing sides out in the open. As Samsung says, ‘Everyone’s Invited’ =) By 7 30 PM the rec room had quite a crowd gathered up, which included many of our shining stars waiting for their moment to blow us away (metaphorically =P)

The ambience was fitting and the work on the lights amplified the effects. Not to mention the back drop of the coincidental, flashy, not so working TV matched in to give a pretty kool effect as well. No I’m not being sarcastic. It was actually matching out with the whole setting =)

So! The stage was set, and our musicians and singers ready to rock it out! The staring act was quite an interesting one to say the least, the title was ‘Business Time’, and not the corporate type if that comes to mind. Let’s just ...

Open HOuse on SecurIty sitUation @ Lums
Anam Saeed tells us what went down...
Sarah Fatima | 03/11/2009

An openhouse by Student council was organized to discuss the various suggestions by administration for the safety of students. The openhouse began quite on time and our acting Vice chancellor Mr. Anjum Naseem, Mr. Tariq Jadoon and head of student council Abdur Rehman addressed the students regarding the security measures taken and the one’s in pipeline to get a generalized view of the students.

Abdur Rehman pointed out that the main reason for closing all institutions is the threat for symbolic places and LUMS is one of them. LUMS includes the best students from all around Pakistan and the international recognition makes it a prominent target for the terrorists’ activities. He mentioned that a meeting was held with ASP defense last Saturday and he has unveiled some specific threats for LUMS by the terrorists’. Since the leading talibans have been killed during the operations conducted by Governments, their targets are now create ...

Battle of the CRs. Part 2.
The interview of Mr. Hamza Khan
Maheen Rashid |

For the first part of this two part interview series go here: http://www.lumsdailystudent.com/news/story.php?id=486

Hamza Khan on his experiences as CR

LDS: How was the campaigning for the CR position?

Hamza: To be very honest, I didn’t ask for a single vote. To this day I have no idea about who voted for me. I know of five people who have voted for me, but apart from that I have no idea how many votes I got. I can guess about who voted for me, but I don’t know. I never made voters’ lists like the other camp’s people make, nor did I send out any mails. Around that time, in fact – I’ll tell you something interesting. I hosted a dinner. An ice-breaking ACF dinner. Around that time I announced the dinner, and after that the election was announced. Two days later they were going to be held. At that time the other camp people had this idea that I’m hosting this dinner as some kind of scheme for ...

MY PHILOSOPHY WONT WORK HERE
By Fatima Hasnain
Maryam Farooq | 22/10/2009

I have never wanted to go to school so badly as I do today. Heck, I\'ve never wanted to take an exam I haven\'t even prepared for, as badly as I do today! But we are stuck, you and I and scores like us. Because we live in fear and we breathe death.

LUMS has been shut down for a week. And as I said to a friend, maybe it\'s a good thing. Because we, the ones at LUMS, are so disconnected from Pakistan, that it had to take the death of seven students, seven of our people, to make us pause our movies and type google news instead of facebook in our urls. Because with the divide between classes here, it\'s as if Pakistan is two countries; one where all the news comes from, bombs, stampedes at ration lines, acid attacks, rapes and one where LUMS is, where people (even a few crazy women) can walk the clean quiet streets of defence and cantt, where people dine in every increasing style, where the only effects of terrorism are a few ...

PROTEST....or not?!
By Sarah Fatima Khan
Maryam Farooq | 21/10/2009

In a silently emptying LUMS, as people made way to their homes or other refuges as their university closed down for a week in lieu of the recent events, the sun continued to shine bright.

At one pm, people started gathering in front of the PDC. The point of this effort was to record a protest on the suicide bombing held in the International Islamic University yesterday and express solidarity with the students of the country. The gathering swelled to around fifty people, mostly comprising of senior faculty members. A protest march took place in front of the PDC lawns and it was followed by an address by the Vice Chancellor Dr. Ahmed Jan Durrani, Dr. Rasul Baksh Rais, Dr. Zahoor Hassan, Dr. Ijaz Nabi and the president of LPS.

The Vice Chancellor gave the students assurances about the measures being taken to increase the security at LUMS, which included providing the guards with better weapons and opening up the 2nd gate ...

LUMS Closes!!
Written by Taimur Zuberi
Syed Uzair Ahsan | 21/10/2009

What a hell (pun intended) of a day has this been? It was a sad day in the history of college education. The news of bomb blasts in Islamabad slowly spread among students, who were shielded from the outside world because of the ever important mids. Then there were more news of colleges and schools being shut down for the week amongst security concerns in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi. However, the crux of the issue was LUMS, yes or no, off or not?

So, as the students ‘eagerly’ awaited the final word from the VC, though Geo’s announcement had been taken as good enough justification to not study for the mid tomorrow and pray for ‘the email’. Confusion reigned, with students seen debating on the likelihood of LUMS adhering to the Punjab government’s order, and stories of a high level admin meeting being held to decide the situation… alongside rumors of some faculty debate being held on…wait for it…PDA (yes PDA) in the white tents ...
