Under a canopy of stars.

The night was quiet, the air, serene. The stars shined bright against a dark majestic sky. The snakes were restless, eager for prey, the flora stationary, except for the twinkling of miniature lights. It would seem like the backdrop of a Disney fairytale. A closer look and you saw a giant die hanging from the sky, bright letters dazzling in colorful lights and eerily enough, ladders leading up to…no, not Repunzel’s tower but to the windows of DR’s. And then I spot giant boardgames…and I asked myself: where am I??
I was at one of the most awaited events of the year taking place in the central courtyard: FoTL ( Faculty on the line- for those of you who’ve ignored the hoards of mails screaming:”yeh fotl kya hai??!!!”) I must say they have done an amazing job this year round with the décor and the set…a perfect little wonderland where we may enjoy those rare moments when we get to see those intimidating, calm instructors of ours doing things that we might just fantasize about otherwise.
The event was hosted by our very own Shahbaz Bhai and the perky Fatima Rizwan. The former managed to bag a lot of attention and praise with his lacha and pagri not to mention his frequent jokes in Punjabi … and though I was sitting at a considerable distance from the stage I could’ve sworn I spotted some hint of eyeliner. I am a girl after all!
The evening kicked off with a crazy game of musical chairs with the participants circumambulating the chairs to the music of Crazy Frog with Uzma Mazhar resolute to take her chair along on the trip. Sadly Dr.Sultan was the first “casualty’ according to Shahbaz bhae and the game became even more interesting when half way through Uzma Mazhar decided it was a good idea to just secure a seat and settle in comfortably while the music was still on and the others were still at it. One by one the participants were eliminated, as chairs were frantically secured till Ms.Noor -e -hirra emerged as the winner.
Next was the egg on the spoon race, which was a hilarious sight with concern over sanitary issues which were resolved by the hosts convincing the participants that the spoons were sterilized (were they now? :p) This was really a battle of poise and Dr.Falak Sher ended up bagging the first prize(his face scrunched up in full concentration during the race an unforgettable sight), with Ms.Asma Hayat and her impeccable calm and poise securing second and Dr.Umer Saif getting the third position.
Perhaps the most happening round of the evening was the Dumb-Charades game where the instructors’ acting skills were put to the test. Just to highlight the classic moments: Dr.Falak Sher dancing (if you can call flailing your arms and skipping, dancing) to make his team members guess “Nach na janay angan terha’ and Dr.Sultan Sial taking off his waistcoat and using it as a cape to describe ‘Superman’. I strongly advise you to use your imagination to really get the feel of the even! The game proved to be a piece of cake for the girls…(well duh we ARE smart) they guessed almost every movie.
Then there was a question-answer round. A lot of interesting answers came up, with Ms. Uzma Mazhar taking more than a decent amount of help from the audience. Most amusing part was Usman Qazi piping up one item after the next of make-up…the whole while staring at Uzma Mazhar’s face for cues. I was impressed.
The faculty really got us ROFL (and if you are being judgmental... our faculty DOES know what this means) during the competition involving a series of tasks, beginning with peeling an egg, putting on a tie, braiding a paranda and finally blowing a balloon. The scene really brought tears of mirth into many eyes…how many times have you seen our male instructors braiding a paranda holding one of the ends with their teeth??Awesome job guys! Zainab Saeed and Uzma Mazhar emerged as the victors (see…girls again)
The evening finale comprised a game of Snakes and Ladders using an amazing concept of a life-sized board. It was great fun to watch with Ms.Asma Hayat and Sultan Sial being bitten my paper Mache snakes and climbing up glittery ladders. And…Ms Asma won! No surprises there…(did I tell you how great we girls are?) The game had several interesting highlights…most important of which was Sultan Sial singing…for a few moments I didn’t realize what language it was…but his courage was commendable. Also both participants relived their childhood fantasies and took the slide down!
The team winning first prize: Ms.Asma, Ms. Noor e Hira nd Ms. Zainab Saeed. And Dr.Sultan Sial and Dr.Atif Alvi’s team emerged as runner’s up.
All in all, it was a great show…congratulations to the team of FOTL for pulling off such an event for the fourth consecutive year…where else do we get to laugh at and with our instructors? Indeed, a job well done!
